YEMEN TWO CURRENCY SYSTEM:

In January 2020, the Central Bank of Yemen (CBY) in Sana'a banned the circulation of new Yemeni rial (YER) banknotes issued by the Internationally Recognized Government (IRG) controlled CBY in Aden. As a result, Yemen currently has two YER currency areas in place. Old banknotes are used in the de-facto authority (DFA) areas in the north of Yemen (also known as the Houthis), and new banknotes are used in the Internationally Recognized Government (IRG) controlled south and east of Yemen.

WAGES:

Based on interviews, the current average wage for a Yemeni teacher is YER 60,000 per month. This figure can be used to calculate purchasing power.
CONTEXT:

In recent years, CBY Aden has printed new YER banknotes to finance the IRG budget-deficit and to replace damaged banknotes in circulation. However, CBY Aden's reliance on the issuance of new notes has created downward pressure on the exchange rate of YER against USD causing higher prices of goods and services on consumers. As a result, the value of new YER banknotes has witnessed a series of significant depreciation events.
